Young Heretics is the brainchild of Melbourne based duo, Matthew Wright and Kitty Hart - eccentric twins, both with a love of warped pop music and sonic invention. The dual vocal attack incorporates theatrical soundscapes, driving beats and a massive selection of other instruments to create a dynamic and inventive sound that is sure to send shivers down your spine.

Having written together for over 15 years, the musical chemistry between the two is evident throughout every aspect of their sound. Creatively and professionally beyond their years, the few shows they have performed have caused a huge stir amongst punters and industry alike.

“The Dreamers E.P” is the band’s debut release, and will be released digitally via iTunes on August 31st. A limited run of CDs will be sold at live shows in the coming months.

I think its about time we here at Thrashingteens blog about DZ again because they have been doing some cool things that make us like them more and more. First thing that brought the attention to them was their break through video of them drinking a bottle of Jager to their song The Mess Up, Next they announced that they would be setting off on a 'free beers tour party' if they won the Uncharted competition and the $25,000 bounty.

Now recently a couple of things have got us excited, after creating a fair bit of buzz and attention from labels big and small they have signed to Brand new Brissy Independent label Useless Art Records, having been created for the sole purpose of putting out DZ's debut EP. Next They have just released a killer new track Bad Blood from that debut EP. Its a rip roaring and high intensity track which showcases their ability to mush punky, party and extremely catchy elements into songs that last longer than most virgins.

Lastly they are doing a lap round the country with them other brissy Punk/Indie favs, I Heart Hiroshima, and playing a DJ set in the Jager Cube at Splenour!!! Plus if your From the Sunny Coast of live with 100 miles of that coast then you better attend one of the best night of music the place has ever seen. The froth levels are pretty high..

The Mars Volta – Octahedron

The Volta are known for their epic, long and sporadic albums. Not only are the songs on these albums cryptically gnarly and fucked up but so is the bizarre way in which they are compiled. This is partly the reason that I personally like to listen to them and why others choose to chain smoke bongs whilst doing the same. However, the most alien thing about new album Octahedron to me is that it is none of the above. Don’t get me wrong, there are a few songs on here that showcase their insane level of talent and concentration but definitely not in the same way as the previous works. The name in itself (Octahedron) is the name of a three dimensional, geometric shape. At first I thought this was just Omar, Cedric and the rest of the bandits being their trippy selves but no, it’s deeper than that. It makes reference to the “geometric” and structured nature of the album. Forget the washed noise and looped sounds of the past. The previous record “The Bedlam in Goliath” started paving the way for an angry, faster sound (mostly from drum prodigy Thomas Pridgen’s in-fucking-sane work) and it’s apparent that it still exists within Octahedron.

The album starts off with a trademark Mexican inspired ballad (Since We’ve Been Wrong) complete with Cedric’s lyrics that the smartest language professor in the world couldn’t decipher. It’s a soft and almost welcoming gateway into the album, which I find way too fucking strange and uncanny for the Volta as this has never been the case. However, it starts picking up with Omar’s guitar skills (which I might say are getting crazier album by album. Pridgen starts beating the absolute shit out of the drums too which add to the tune but then the energy fades and its back to a slow ditty. Which isn’t bad, but fuck, it isn’t the Volta. It does however, turn into some crazy shit when the track “Cotopaxi” makes it entrance. This track is one for the books because it’s just pure Volta on speed. It continues on its unfamiliar path until the last track “Luciforms” when we get introduced to Radiohead-esque backing samples. Another thing about this album is it really does show how emotive Cedric’s voice can actually get as some songs really are utter beauty. Which is just fucking weird…. What the fuck is going on here? Will we ever be getting deloused in the Comatorium with our old friend Frances the Mute again? I doubt it. I cant actually say how I feel about that but I don’t think Omar would give a shit even if I could. –Ian

Original Wu-Tang Clan member Ghostface Killah played at the Beach Hotel at Byron bay on the 1st of june. Thrashing Teens was on that shit. Word Up.

I was skeptical about this purely because of sketchy reports of the show he just played in Brisbane. Apparently the crowd (full of Brisbane’s hardest crews such as the “Logan Crips”– eeek) didn’t respect his minute of silence for Michael Jackson. Fuck skepticism and fuck that crowd. The Byron bay show was dope. The commitment he showed for the entire gig was only shut down by the local noise “curfew” that apparently starts at midnight. What the fuck was with that? It’s Byron fucking bay! Everyone envisions it as this chilled out party town but I guess they don’t like live music past a certain time. Maybe it keeps the paranoid old hippies up? I kind of felt like I was getting down to some rad beats at my grandma’s house, but oh well. The Killah wasn’t too stoked about it either, he wanted to keep bumping his shit. The man is a rarity within himself because of his approach towards the hip hop genre he shared a part in fathering. Throughout the shifting musical content, he fizzled in the point of how ashamed he was of the terrible mainstream shit that people associate with the term hip hop today. “It aint about what you got. It’s about what you say.” IHe continued to blast out some absolute classics off of Fishscale and his newest Big Doe Rehab then brought it back to textbook, 90’s skate movie shit off of the Clan’s original 36 chambers. He finished the show off by saying he would be prepared to get back over here as soon as we wanted him too, which was fucking awesome. He did however say this before he invited the “ladies” in the house to come up and dance with him. I have to say, I don’t think any of them fit the “shorty” category at all but you could see there deluded, derro boyfriends looking on with some sort of pride. Maybe they thought a little differently than I did. Anyway, lets just hope the grizzly bear chics he invited up on stage didn't scare him away and that he really does make a return. He is definitely one of the last of a dying breed - the intelligent, talented hip hop artist. -Ian

The veils

Hailing from London via New Zealand, The Veils are an indie/alternative band making music that's both new and classic sounding. With Three records now under their belt they are a solid outfit that i am sure,will stand the test of time...

Nux Vomica was the breakthrough record for the trio and was at the top end of year end lists in the year of its release (06/07). Now they have a (not so) new (released in April) record. Titled Sun Gangs it must have been hard to write after the critical success of Nux Vomica, but it not only lives up to the predecessor but also stands apart in terms or direction and has this extra level in sound and production.

Folks have drawn similarities to front man Finn Andrews with people like Nick Cave and Ian Curtis and he has the abilities to back up their claim along with the story telling and intriguing lyrics. Sun Gangs is a great powerful record and one that gets better with every listen, opener 'Sit down by the fire' brings the album to life at first beat and single 'The Letter' shows the band can do the poppy thing if need be.

We just spoke to Dave (he's the one waving to you in the red flannel. Say hi dave. Hiiiiiii) from Scottish sextet Dananananaykroyd via le telephone. We spoke about their debut album 'Hey Everyone', about coming to play Splendour and their adventures with the Loch Ness Monster. Dave was stoked to be coming to play in Australia, and said he and the gang definately want a walk-on-roll on Neighbours. Here's what went down:

Us: I hear you guys are coming to Australia!

Dave: Yeah we're sooo excited about it. It seems ridiculous that a band that started up in Scotland can end up going to the other side of the world.

Us: And you've never been to Australia before?

Dave: None have us had been there before, not even for holidays or anything. As a band we've only gone around Europe and America . So it's well on the other side.

Us: And you guys just played SXSW.

Dave: Yeah it was really exciting. It was amazing. I was expecting more of a tour and playing alot of gigs, but it just felt like a party, and sitting in the sun. We're so excited that we're going back again next year.

Us: Yeah we saw your tour video on your blog, you guys seem to be on it quite a bit...

Dave: Yeah, I mean, being in a band is less glamorous than what people think. It's amazing and I wouldn't change it for the world but theres so much sitting about waiting for something to happen, like in between gigs and soundchecks. So we've got alot of time on our hands, so we make the most of it.

Us: Yeah like having pillow fights and tackling each other..

Dave: Haha yeah we're up for it.

Us: So i just wanted to ask about your name. It's a play on words between Batman and Dan Aykroyd yeah?

Dave: Yeah it's just a bit of a silly joke. One night where we put the band together, we booked a gig and we needed a name, and we thought just thought that was a good idea. Then like 5 gigs down the line and we were like 'fuck we're actually stuck to it'.

Us: What's the funniest way someone's ever pronounced it?

Dave: Oh we had one poster for a gig we were playing, and I don't know how they managed to get this wrong, but they wrote "Dan and An Asteroid" haha. But they hadn't even spelt asteroid correctly.

Us: (LOL). That's hilarious.

Dave: So yeah I think it's equally as much a blessing and a curse. It doesn't really tell you what type of band we are. One thing you can take from it is knowing that the band doesn't take ourselves too seriously. I mean, we're serious about the music, but I think it's important to have a sense of humour.

Us: You guys are playing Reading and Leeds soon.

Dave: Yeah that's going to be one of the first big festival we've played. It's crazy. (then he spoke some quick words in his thick scottish accent that we couldn't understand)... it's a fun party kind of.

Us: Yeah, listening to your record, I get the feel that you guys are going to be fun live.

Dave: There's alot more action and crowd participation than you might expect if you just hear the album. I feel like, we've recorded stuff before but it doesn't get close to what we're really like live as a band. This album got really close. You won't ever get the full picture unless you see it live. It helps that there's quite alot of us onstage, to get the crowd involved. I don't like the idea of a total rockstar up on stage making it all about them, everyone comes to gigs and festivals to have a good time.

Us: What is the best gig you've ever played?

Dave: We played a lovely venue in Glasgow called Bar Lounge (?? it might have been the barrel lounge, again with the loss in translation..). I saw most of my favourite bands there growing up as a teenager in the 90s. We hadn't played Glasgow in ages and it was like a homecoming.

Us: And who were your musical influences growing up?

The only band that all members agreed on was Smashing Pumpkins. But for me growing up it was bands like Fugazi, Nirvana and The Clash, bands like that.

Us: Listening to your record, it reminded me of bands like Test Icicles and Blood Brothers..

Dave: Oh we love Blood Brothers. We got to open for them in London, not that long before they broke up. It was ridiculous. We caught up with them after the show and they said they liked our band and it made us all very very happy.

Us: Who are your favourite bands at the minute?

Dave: My favourite band of last year Los Campesinos, a great Welsh Band. There's a great band in Scotland Copy Haho, and we toured with a band called Dutch Uncles.

Us: Has anyone in your band met the Loch Ness Monster?

Dave: Haha no not yet. We're playing a festival to there. I've never been to Loch Ness, but I hope I will do.

Us: What are you expecting when you come to Australia, kangaroos and wombats?

Dave: Well my view of Australia is totally based upon a TV program Neighbours. If we got to go on there, it would be a dream come true. When you write this article I want you to be pushing for 'Dananananaykroyd on Neighbours'.

Us: You guys are getting heaps of media attention over here, like you're everywhere.

Dave: Its weird cause we're not that aware of what goes on. Like I have a cousin who lives in Australia who messaged me on Facebook yesterday saying he keeps hearing me on the radio, and it's like 'What? We're on radio in Australia?'.

Us: Black Wax is the latest single. The video for it is very creative.

Dave: Yeah everyone in the band likes dogs, so we had to have a dog in the video.

Us: It's a scary dog.

Dave: Yeah in the video its quite scary and big but it was actually really lovely and friendly.

Us: Thanks for your time Dave. It was good to talk to you. Is there anything else you wanted to say?

Dave: Ummm... I covered Neighbours and I think thats it. So maybe just pave the way for us and it'll all be good.

I can not stop listening to this band! I just recently got their album "tentacles" It is fucking insane!

This band are doing so much different shit! Their music is fast grunge then ambient then phsychadellic.

To me the vocals sound as if the dude was influenced by Kurt Cobain, he has pain in his voice and delivers

his lyrics with large screams!

Stand out track's are "Dust"&"Andrew" , each song flows onto the next, I think it makes the album more

warm and easy to listen to. They have recently toured with grunge heavy weights Dinosaur Jr. which is

an accomplishment alone. They are about to tour europe for their first time playing a heap of festivals and

meeting up with bands like Deerhunter and Black Lips.

THE DEAD WEATHER

The dead weather has been causing a bit of hype as of late, having only released a single a couple of months back! I dont even think they have been playing any actual gigs! Mainly just T.V shows and basement sessions. If you don't know the Dead Weather it is basically a very cool new band made up from members of other very cool bands. One sexy singer Alison Mosshart (the Kills), a musical freak playing skins Jack White (white stripes), Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone age) playing a very nice hollow body and their rad bass player sporting a sweet middle part Jack Lawrence (The Raconteurs).

Their debut is released july 13th.

Some Bands you can tell what is coming next! Buick six you could not! It was rocky, it was psychedelic, it was punk and it was funky but most of all it was fucking loud! I had not listened to any previous tracks before tonight at Neverland but i was dancing the whole set through . So much energy was getting thrown around between the band and the very enthusiastic fans, at one stage got knocked into a wall from a breakout mini-mosh. Their whole set i was trying to sum up similarities between their music an other bands, this proved fucking hard! The only real thing that came to mind was the black keys mainly because the drummer was sporting a recent tour t-shirt and also because this small band was producing such a massive sound! Stand out tracks were "changes" which featured some very nice finger work on one of the very tidy "tele's" that were being traded between songs, also " She ain't right" which i was certain was a cover but I'm most probably wrong. I am not really into their name, but this is a band to watch! JM

Hi, I'm Kelsey and this is my first post, and since I’m a girl - the odds are stacked highly against me because apparently girls know nothing and evidently our music tastes are “fuckennn gayyyyy”.

I’m not sure if I can prove otherwise, but to be honest: I am too tired to care.

Anyway, I’m here to rant about a four-piece band from Sydney called SONGS.

I saw these dudes last Saturday night supporting Deerhunter, and I’m not gonna lie, these Sydney-siders gave the Atlantic boys a run for their money with an epic set with equally as epic interludes. They sound like the aforementioned Deerhunter/Lotus Plaza with a heavy use of reverb (and the fact that their vocalist sounds way too much like Bradford Cox). That said, Songs' sound is also reminiscent of oldies (but goodies) Pixies.

And you know they're good when VICE has this to say about them:
"Songs are four people who know a lot of stuff and who make music that sounds like they know a lot of stuff."
(I have no idea what that actually means, but VICE are fucking hard to please, so therefore it has to be good)

Their name is cool, however it’s highly inconvenient and confusing. It took me a few good minutes of myspace stalking to find their site (a simple Google search proved to be a headache) .... and here it is:

Phone Sex with "Mickey" Tomlinson

Right well last week we (well me as an individual really) attempted our first ever phone interview for the website with Michael Tomlinson, lead singer and guitarist of Yves Klein Blue.

And we stuffed it up big time (well me again as an individual really). In my defence, I hate talking to my best friends over the phone let alone the frontman of one of my favourite bands, so it was destined to fail before it began. And it wasn't the worst interview the world has ever seen, in fact it would have been completely fine if I was 40-years-old, writing for The Age newspaper and had never heard of the band. Boring, standard questions, boring standard interviewer. But we will live and learn. I have banned myself from further phone interviews. But enough about me. The man of the hour is Tomlinson. Him and his band of merry men have just wrapped up work on their debut record 'Ragged And Ecstatic', which drops on June 26th.

'Getting Wise' is the first track to be released from the album, and here's what Michael had to say about the song: "it's really about deciding what you want to be, and what you want to do with your life. We're told when we're like 15 or 16 that we have to start choosing subjects at school that set us up for what we want to do at uni that set us up for a job and career. I thought it was an absolute crock of shit that I had to decide what I wanted to be when I was 16. Alot of people are so daunted by this task that they keep changing. But if you keep getting 2 steps of your way into a journey and then bowing out and going back to the start, you'll never get anywhere..."

On recording the album in L.A: "It was incredibly intense. And very rewarding. The studio experience was very confronting. Our producer Kevin was very down the line when he thought an arrangement wasn't working or whether a song has a part missing. His role was to tell us when he thought something wasn't working, and that was not pleasant. But this intense analysis and focus on our work really gave rise to what we think is something that surpasses what we have previously ever done. That was the final 5% between something we would have been very proud of and that we thought was great, to something that we were exceptionally proud of and that we never thought we could do."

On the sound of the album: "In the quality of the sound, we've got alot more vintage. I guess it's alot more raw and natural sounding which we really dig. On a musical level, our listening has really exploded, and we've been listening to everything from reggae soul to New Orleans funeral jazz to 80's punk, and you can really tell. There's more ideas, there's more grooves and there's more light and shade. We think it's all cohesive and that it all works together and tells the same story and feels bonded together."

On Touring Overseas: "We went through New York and L.A, before getting over to London and the U.K and it's been a tremendous but huge month. I mean, doing our album artwork, listening to the masters, sequencing the album all at night after we'd get home after the shows because that's office hours back in Australia, and playing shows in the U.S and U.K, each day was like living 2 days."

On the Sydney & Melbourne Single Launch Shows: "They were very very very great. For the melbourne show we were still on london time, so there was a huge build up for that one cause we were all so tired and the minute we got on stage, it was just brilliant to be back home. And murray from The Wiggles was there - that was so good. They were both really packed. It just really hit us how nice it was to finally be back home."

On The Upcoming Tour: "We're just going to do what we do. We'll be playing the record. PLus we're touring with the philly jays (Philedelphia Grand Jury) so I'm sure there'll be a few suprises once our personalities mingle. We feel more confident than ever in our songs and we're gonna play the record and mean it.

We're catching up with the boys when they play their hometown gig at the Brisbane Powerhouse on June 26th, and Michael promised to wear his nice underwear. And I promise to not be as shit this time round. I cannot rave on enough about how great this gig is going be. Tickets are only $15 or something stupid like that. Absolutely cannot wait. -JB-

Plane Flight to Homelessness. (Part 1)

Have you ever been to London? It’s a great fucking place despite the shitty weather and people telling you that it’s not a great place. The history, the music, the teeth. Of course, who could forget that incredible English food? I mean, you can honestly have anything in a fucking sandwich there. Yay! Sandwiches! I have to say though; half the fun of it is the plane flight there and then of course, the arrival.

So I show up at the airport with a few hours to spare. You know, being a good traveler, you’ve got to do these things. That and also, there are several bars in the airport. So I sit down and have a beer, which in a short amount of time, quickly turns into several. After sitting by my lonesome, thinking about how long it has been since I’ve seen my girlfriend (who I’m meeting in Amsterdam) I decide its time for a cigarette.

I head out to the magnificent smoking balcony that Brisbane International Airport has provided for society’s curse that is the cigarette smoker. They have to provide for everyone right? They have prayer rooms, red rooster and a children’s playground so a smoker’s balcony is just another care filled attribute. Anyway, I get into conversation with a bulldyke from South Africa, who frankly scares the absolute shit out of me. I mean this chic was like Fred Durst. Backwards hat clad, angry and constantly talking about breaking shit. After listening to her talk about Korn’s latest album for 20 minutes, I realize that I am too scared of her to disagree with anything she says. I also realize that my flight boarded 10 minutes ago and that they are calling my name throughout the whole airport over the loudspeaker.

I drag my trashed ass over to the plane. It was pathetic really. I cross that stupid bridge thing that extends to the plane and I enter the aircraft. Keep in mind the whole plane has boarded and are looking at me like I’m Bono. They think I’m a total cunt. I get to my seat, order a few more beers and after a while pass out. I wake up in Singapore.

Singapore was a breeze. Probably because I don’t remember much of it. There was this bar called Harry’s that had a cactus garden where I decided to have a few Singapore Slings. When is the next time I would actually be in Singapore, honestly? I guess it was the cultural aspect that pushed me to do so as well as the fact that I needed to inebriate myself further for the next flight. ….

Ahh, the fabled next flight. It’s a little longer than the first hell ride so I have plenty more time to make an ass out of myself. I get to my seat and find out that I’m sitting next to a Kenyan exchange student. We get into talking about fellow Kenyan Barack Obama winning the United States Presidency. Its all totally cool until he starts becoming a little scared when I start slurring about what a “sick cunt” he is. I guess this term doesn’t have as much credibility in Kenya as it does in Australia. Who would have thought?

Anyway, the Kenyan finally passes out and I’m still ordering drinks like Shane MacGowan. I decide it might be best to get some sleep, as I have to get on another plane to Amsterdam when I arrive in London. I am stashing my empty beer cans under the Kenyan’s seat so that the stewardesses don’t see them thus cut off my booze supply. I pass out. I wake up and the plane is descending. Not such a bad plan after all.

I decided to pull the bag from under the Kenyan’s seat to show him how many beers I had actually drank in some sort of retarded plan to save face from before. He was disgusted to say the least but still hid it under a friendly smile. The plane lands and we hear over the loudspeaker that this is the coldest winter London has had in twenty years. Everything is covered in ice and snow. My plane for Amsterdam leaves in 3 hours and I realize at this point that it does not leave from Heathrow. It leaves from City airport. Which is one of the five airports in London and also way the fuck across the other end of the city.

Hailing from Nottingham in the UK, Lovvers are chock-full of energy and thrust out a sound that’s full of flavour and at times edgy and chaotic. Classifying themselves on their space as ‘punk/pop punk/post punk, (that’s three parts punk people) they deliver a lo-fi sound with really cool guitar riffs and mangled vocals. The Thin White Duke has gone through many different phases (and pounds of cocaine) as the eras in which he performed evolved. As time changed David Bowie (anyone? Anyone?), so did the characteristic personas in which he carried himself. From differently styled, flowing red mullets to 80’s Berlin minimalism and later tapping the gross 90’s rave scene, David has done it all. However, it’s safe to say that the most well known and famous persona, was the Ziggy Stardust era (complete with band, the Spiders from Mars). This was the messiah calling of Glam Rock. It was this era that was the most fundamental for fast, gnarly rock like punk and old school metal. Lets face it, without this shit, you wouldn’t have ever heard half of the stuff you listen to today. This literally started the biggest musical chain reaction of all time. While Patrick Wolf questions the art of fucking a horse he may be in love with, he won’t ever do something of this stature. In fact, its artists like him that wouldn’t even know where to start without this.

The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, with its hymn-like status, was arguably the most famous album from this era. Although, the Ziggy persona may have started making an early, premature appearance in Hunky Dory, this album practically defines the era. Where Hunky Dory featured classics like “Queen Bitch”, The Rise and Fall was shot full of speed with epic tracks like “Moonage Daydream”. It continues its interstellar greatness with classics like “Starman” and a song about a transvestite named “Lady Stardust”. Guitarist Mick Ronson of the Spiders showcases some rad guitar that only gets better as the album progresses. This album has become a necessity for anyone who doesn’t want to sound like Pete Murray. It optimises the spirit of Rock and Roll. Unlike the K-Mart soundtrack tunes of that aforementioned douche bag.

On the other side of the wide, profitable spectrum that is the Stardust era sits Aladdin Sane. This album is a straight up classic as well but for different reasons. The heavy, droning guitar in tracks like “Cracked Actor” and “Watch That Man” make it a pivotal starting point for anything that remotely tries to say “I don’t give a fuck”. Even in the slower songs such as “Time” the listener is treated to anthem-like lyrics of rampant Quaalude abuse and a maelstrom lifestyle. There must have been some heavy drinking going on during its production because this album is utterly raw and edgy. It was this aspect that must have captivated legends like Johnny Thunders and the New York Dolls. The heavy guitar riffs and offensive lyrics make it appeal to a different crowd then that of The Rise and the Fall, or maybe in fact, just a gnarlier one.

Which album is better? I guess it really depends on the listener and context of the mood desired. If an emotive memory slide show is what you are going for, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust is for you. If you want to drink JD from the bottle whilst snorting that last line of god knows what off the grungy toilet seat in front of you, your better off jamming to Aladdin Sane. Or, why not just make it easy, and just do both in the same day getting the best of both worlds? –Ian

RAINWATER CASSETTE EXCHANGE

Yeah, yeah Deerhunter was just featured on the cover of Time Off but that doesn't mean they just last week spontaneously came to be. That would be impressive though because these guys are really, really good.

The Atlanta, GA based foursome have this dreamy brand of rock that they've been perfecting for years and it just keeps getting better. Their latest release which came out last month, Rainwater Cassette Exchange is my favorite Deerhunter release to date. It's just solid as shit. Be warned, it's only 15 minutes long and finishes really strong . Thus, when the last song ends, the EP ends and you're left wishing there were more. Don't worry too much, Deerhunter put out a lot of music and I'm confident they won't disappoint with their next release. They never do.

Deerhunter are playing The Zoo this saturday night! I'm pumped about it and you should be too; these guys have an amazing live show (so I see/ hear).

Our favourite drug taking modern rocker pete doherty was found lying on the floor in a toilet with a needle in his arm, onboard a British Airways flight to the land of the swiss to play Neuchatel Open Air Festival.

Doherty was arrested upon arrival, they charged him for testing positive to drugs (derr) and was released only an hour and a half later, where he went on to play that night!

Tame Impala Greenfest

Ok, so this weekend is Greenfest in Brisbane. I know you all want to be like "I don't give a fuck about the environment because I don't give a fuck about anything except Marc Jacobs and having drinks at Elsewhere." Give your pointy boots and bow ties a rest for the weekend and put on an uncomfortable hemp shirt.

I went today (Friday the 5th of June) and watched (complete with 15 other people) Tame Impala play a gnarly, intimate show. It was like watching a band straight out of the acid drenched era of the 60's. Without any signs of strain at all, they blasted out a continuous, psychadellic phenomena for a full hour. The best part is they are playing all weekend long and even better is the fact that its completely free. Did I mention the fact that their is minimal security? Sneak all the beer and spliffs you want in and go check these guys out. You won't be disappointed and neither will the vagrant hippie sitting next to you inhaling your second hand smoke. Your blowing it if you don't go and for fuck's sake, its free. Fuckin cheap ass.....

OK so i don't know what the deal was but nathan from wavves melted! Playing a festival in barcelona in front of a massive crowd on the weekend! It resulted in ryan (the drummer) pouring a beer over nathan's head and walking off stage, then nathan yelled "get back here mother fucker were not done!" The band released a press statement and said it was due to mental health issues (alcohol) ! They have cancelled the rest of their european tour! WTF dont do this, it was just a lovers tiff! stay together! at least until i get to see you!

Now don't think 'eww highschool kids are shit' cause The Beatles and Silverchair started in Highschool. And so did Linkin Park. There is this band Dirty Bird who are ruling. Absolutely killed it in their heat a couple of weeks back. Their track 'I'm A Teen' opens with the line 'Your mum's a fat slut'. If nothing else, come to see the reactions of the parent's when the boys drop that one. Bangers&Mash, Eternal Rest, Shotgun Daisey and Skywriter round off the bill. Catch it all unfold at the Southbank Institute of Technology Gig Studio tonight from 6 for $5.

BAT FACT: Most bats only give birth to 1 pup per year, making them very vulnerable to extinction.

This useless fact certainly doesn't apply to the girls behind BATS Magazine, who just popped out their 4th epic love-child in 8 months. And the girls don't just stop at putting utterly hilarious words to paper, neigh! To coincide with the release of the new issue, they decided to throw an all ages launch party, which we at Thrashingteens dubbed 'indie kindy'. Now we aren't overly old (just scrapping in on the 'teens' nomenclature) but we felt like fucking dinosaurs. We may as well have rocked up with portable I.V drips and zimmer frames... But the kids were fucking ruling. Dude when I was 16 I was shit. I can't remeber what I did back then but it sure as fuck didn't contain running a magazine and throwing sweet-ass parties.

Delivering live sets were local bands We Were Arks, Teleprompter, Comic Sans and Idle Cranes, with Last Dinosaurs playing a rowdy set to round it all up.

Plain simple: they're doing shit. They get off their ass, see past 'The Hill's marathons and quote/unquote 'borange' fake tans, and provide a platform for the kids to have a creative outlet in their chosen feilds.

Thrashingteens swap words of wisdom (and by wisdom I mean complete and utter bullshit) with 80% of the BATS team.

Honestly some of the best fun we've had in ages. Entering the 'Bat Cave' was like stepping into another universe. Complete with $1.50 soft drinks, an array of half-eaten cheeseburgers, re-runs of 'Bewitched' and a mystical water fountain, the converted Ahimsa Lounge in West End was the perfect setting for the gig. Run-ins with the infamous 'Catman' and our favourite tapdancer/astrologist/shit-talker Gabbi, reinforced that the BATS Launch was on a whooooole other level.

And on the actual 'publication', the filthy read is fucking hilarious. We got our hands on all 4 copies and LOL-ed our asses all the way back to the Gold Coast. The girl's effortless DIY approach to making the mag is unreal.

Quote of Issue Four: Youngest editor Bette explains how the dreaded Bindi Irwin prowls her in her deepest, darkest nightmares: 'In my dreams she crimps my hair, makes me learn all her dance moves and as a result I've become the fifth croc-man'.

Rad Riders

Friday night saw Sydney lads Red Riders play Neverland Bar, as part of their single release tour for 'You've Got A Lotta Nerve', the first track to be released from the forthcoming 'Drown In Colour' record.

Opening band, The Delta Riggs absolutely smashed it last night. I don’t think anyone could have expected different after last week’s legendary performance. This band is doing exactly what needs to be done, bringing the spirit of rock and roll right back to where it never should have left in the first place. The band showed no signs of fatigue as they ploughed through their set like a train with no breaks. These guys prove that Australia really does put Garage Rock on the map (The Saints, Radio Birdman, The Scientists) and that they are the next grade-A export. It’s exactly what this country’s music scene needs at the moment. The times are calling for this music, as they always should of. Hopefully it takes over the greasy, spray-tanned electro bullshit that is plaguing the radio waves at this daft point in time.

The beauty of last night is that we as an audience were treated with the pleasure of getting two sides of the rock and roll coin. The other side of this coin being Red Riders. We caught up with Alex and Brad before the gig and they were the most enthusiastic act we’ve ever done. They told us about their beginnings and influences all while being completely light hearted. The boys also spoke about the new album, filming the clip for 'Y.G.A.L.O.N' and talked shit about hair colour and wearing the same clothes for 18 days straight. Their enthusiasm proved well in the much-anticipated set. These guys magnificently gave the audience a tour of their angular but euphoric tones. They played a few tracks from the upcoming album mixed in with some of the classics from 2006’s “Replica Replica”. Their sound is reminiscent of the best times of the fabled “old” Bloc Party. (When they used to be amazing.) In saying this however, the Sydney boys have created their own sound that is gaining an ever-growing fan base. Front man Alex Grigg carried his voice with such halcyon and melody that it replicated studio recordings and then some. Through his delivery and presence i could not help but shake the thought of a young dylan! There were a few dancy, rock numbers, which were driven by Tom Wallace’s fantastic drumming that put grins on faces and rhythm in feet. After a blissful and long set, they finished the night off with their newest single “You Got a Lot of Nerve”. From the preview they gave us last night, we can tell the new Album is going to be killer.

Have you heard of the band... DANANANANAYKROYD? Well we suspect by then end of the year you might have, having just secured a spot on the Dew Process roster, the lads are going to be releasing their debut album ‘Hey Everyone’ later this year.

To me they sound, hard rockish with poppy elements chucked in for good measure and good rhythm to boot BUT REALLY FUN!
Playing a fair few festival dates in Europe this European festival season and making a bit of noise in the blogosphere they might be worth keeping an eye on.

Popping My Cherry with The Delta Riggs

Last Friday night, I was in virgin territory. It was the first time I’d ever properly reviewed a gig, the first time I’d been to the new Neverland Bar, and somehow the first time I’d ever seen local Gold Coast lads The Delta Riggs play. These boys have been the men about town for ages and for whatever reason I’ve never got to see them.

Getting there relatively early, the Neverland Bar blew me away. Definitely one of the best venues on the coast, the brutally simple venue set the mood for what was to come later that evening, and believe me, the vibes were high. A few beers, a few chats, and a few hundred people later, 5 lads stumbled onto the manky stage set up in the corner of the bar; enter The Delta Riggs.

Now to be honest, I was scared that I was going to have to make up a whole load of bullshit for this gig review, but having seen a band of this stature, the words spill out like word vomit. These guys absolutely kill it. A straight-up rock’n’roll band, the boys are raw, punchy and just ‘rock’ in its purest form.

Defined as playing ‘sweaty rock and roll with stupidly sweet pop sensibility’, The Delta Riggs are kinda like Jet, but with more depth. The hints of blues and country add extra element to their sound.

On stage, I can’t stress how easy it all seems to come to them. It was more like seeing them jam than playing in front of the crowd. And it’s this brutal rawness that makes them such an epic band. Stand out track of the set was Get Back, a slower yet still as strong track, based around an over-the-phone argument between Elliot and his girlfriend whilst standing inside a club.

Not to take away from the rest of the guys, it’s frontman Elliot, with charisma nothing short of a rock god that captivates you. Equipped with a harmonica in one hand, and a drink in the other, he’s a true showman. How that massive sound comes out of that wirey skeleton frame I have no idea. His on-stage antics cast him in the character of a rock’n’roll priest, preaching his songs and converting non-believers by the second.

The guys played a killer set, got everyone dancing and also thrashed out covers of LCD Soundsystem’s Daft Punk is Playing At My House, and Slave by The Rolling Stones. They’ve recently recorded at Sony Studios, but after listening to earlier recordings, merely listening to them doesn’t cut-it; it’s when they perform is when the boys truly deliver.

I truthfully haven’t heard a band this brilliant in years, and how they’re not massive I have no idea. It’s a real shame they’re playing this weekend too; I might just have to force myself to go see them again. Put these guys on your to-do list.

A title well deserved of the band behind it, if you are familiar with Mews two essential releases prior Frengers and The Glass Handed Kites you will be well aware there is nothing minimalistic surrounding Mew.
No more stories.. has been three years in the making, recorded in the summer of 2008 in Brooklyn with producer Rich Costey (Glasvegas, Muse) The new album is said to be more lighthearted and accessible.
The new album will be available on August the 25th.

Okay okay okay I know you've already heard the new Kasabian song 8800 times... Get off my case. It's not that song I'm talking about.. So swallow those harsh write-offs until you've finished reading... I'm posting about another track off the new 'West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum' disc from the boys; 'Vlad The Impaler'. Ditching the obvious Doors influences from 'Fire', Vlad is heavier, more distorted but just as epic. One slight downside is the hideous chorus comprising of the lyrics "Get Loose, Get Loose". Not a fan. But to make up for it, the guys have gone and shot a killer 'Death Proof' inspired film clip, staring Noel Feilding as the infamous Vlad, killing bitches left, right and center.

Forward this message on to 28 of your friends or Vlad will appear above your bed at 11:11pm and harpoon you slowly. JB

I first heard of this band about a year back me an some friends packed up a station wagon and headed down to byron. Our friend merry was having a woodstock party. So we rocked into suffolk super keen to dress up and pretend we were living in the times were illegal drugs were common place and free love was about as common as social networking sites these days!
Anyway Our friends band white bats were playing that night and they had brought along some friends from lismore, turns out they were max an ben from zeahorse they were telling me about their band we were talking shit all night probably about sonic youth, i think i passed out in the station wagon after some one told me to do some jager shots! I think most of us slept in cars that night, there was no campfire and nudity like most footage you see from woodstock. Anyway i later checked them out on Myspace! They are very fucking cool! I dont know how to describe them! All i know is i was sorta jealous i wasnt playing cool shit like them, i think last year all i wanted to do was be in a cool grunge band and they were doing it! But they are more than just a "cool band" there is something special there and i cant quite put my finger on it!

The Horrors - Primary Colours

I know, I know. It didn’t come out 5 minutes ago so you’ve lost all faith in how cool I am and what little “street cred” I may have previously possessed has dissolved. Fuck it. I needed this one to “set in”. I got one word for this and it isn’t “different” (like I’ve heard kids say more times than MGMT) Dope is the word I was going for. This is The Horrors as we’ve never known them. Faris’ voice has changed from the “cave-esque” wails that we experienced in Strange House to a haunting, melodic drawl. The lack of church organ and slower bass riffs are due to the fact that Spider (keyboards on Strange House) and Tom (bass on Strange House) switched positions. I guess it was either some gnarly break up or way too much ketamine because this stuff is about 100 times more emotive than any of the previous. Not saying that’s a good or a bad thing. There is just nothing like “Death at the Chapel” on here. However, I guess that there is no possible way this band would have been able to keep going if they kept writing music of that style. It was cool as shit, but it was time for something new as sad as that fact is for some to absorb. But cry me a fucking river and be honest with yourself. This new one is amazing.

It starts of with a killer first track called Mirror’s Image which starts off at a complete calm and then breaks into a contorted but entirely functional mood setter. Then the hollow guitar and reinvented Faris begins. It continues on with magnificent sounds and imagery that make this band who they are regardless of what “era” mode they are in. After three great tracks it trails into a song called Do You Remember that, I personally, think sounds like some hollow but amazing Jane’s Addiction track. Its fucking bad ass! It then tapers into a few emotive numbers. Particularly one called “I Only Think of You” which is definitely reminiscent of some come down they must have experienced but all the same, its fucking cool. Sea within a Sea is …well, we all know it by now. The song ends up engulfing you with its repetitive but unorthodox nature to where you forget you where you actually are relating to time and bearing. Yes, this album is different. You definitely won’t feel like your in some grimy back alley in Victorian London but you will feel like you are in a spaced out Kubrick flick. Which is better? I don’t know, they both sound like pretty rad places to me. - Ian

Thee Oh Sees - Help

old. The Oh Sees new album Help is one of these things, and it's
awesome.

Help is the newest record from the Bay Area's group formerly known as
OCS (now Thee Oh Sees), originally a side project of John Dwyer (The Hospitals, Landed,
Pink and Brown, Coachwhips) which has turned into something a little
more substantial.

This album fits into the presently popular 'lo-fi' noise rock thing
but there's something more than that here and this is more far-
reaching than a typical lo-fi record. It's also worth mentioning these
guys aren't just hopping on the lo-fi bandwagon, they've been making
this music for a while and it shows. What's also really cool is the
more imaginative things not to be found on say a wavves album, wavves
is sick dont get me wrong but I've yet to hear any flute on a wavves
recording.

Chris Colonna has taken nerd to a whooole new level, creating a new Bumblebeez track 'Misfit', using only his Nintendo DS. He got hit up by the VRaw kids to make a basetrack for this years set of internships, and used some gnarly Korg application to make it. It's pretty fucking sweet. It may not go down in history as the worlds best production, but its a sick concept. Staying with wackness, The Glue Society then thought up this concept for the video. Also pretty fucking sweet. I would not hate to own that peg suit.

If K-Rudd's $900 lasted you a measly few days and the economic downfall is getting you down, head over to VRaw and check out the internships on offer. They've only got 2 up at this momentum but they're getting more in the next few weeks. They've had VICE and Modular and Universal Music in the past so amped to see what will come for this year.

These two swedish sister's are very young but they write music with alot of soul and age! They are "First Aid Kit" It is not a typical folk name but their music is. Their songs are filled with beautifily harmonies slow plucked guitar and instruments you wouldnt know how to play. It reminds me of american campfire songs, just with alot more substance and feel! Listen to their song "your not coming home tonight" below it is a perfect example.

Ground Components Return

So if you felt like there was something missing in your life these last couple of years, we understand why... Ground Components have been off the scene, but don’t worry, they are back! Having already played a few shows since there reincarnation, tonight it was the East Brunswick Clubs turn to experience their wrath.

The night started with Shaman Son, blasting out what could be classified in many different scenes they made a tone of noise. Although they would have been better suited to a Butterfly Fly Effect or Cog support, it did not stop them having a lot of fun and generating a lot of similes. The highlight of their show was definitely the lead guitarist, playing epic solo after epic solo he played well beyond his youthful looks and was a stand out. Shaman Son was not bad but apart from the lead guitarist, they failed to show anything that will separate them from the masses of other band that are producing a similar sound at the moment.
Next up... My personal new favourite new band, Harpoons played a short but impressive set. Sounding similar to Melbourne darlings Little Red and Alabama heavy weights Dr. Dog and clearly influenced by indie Americana, Harpoons showed a maturity beyond their years. Lead chick Bec, couldn’t be taller than 5”0 but she certainly knows how to stand above the crowd with her amazing vocals, and lead guitarist and vocalist Jack is a classic rock star in the making. They look like they were having a tone of fun up there and can only grow with shows like this under their belt.

Finally it was time to see the boys that have been in a cave for the past few years. Walking out to a packed house the first thing noticeable was front man Joe McGuigan, lack of mongrel dog long hair, sporting a skinner and tracks he looked fit and ready to give the crowd what they wanted. Opening with On your living room floor it certainly got the crowd eager for the rest of the set which consisted of a lot of new stuff, which sounds great, the talk/rap singing and trade mark, expedition that are Joe’s lyrics are still there and the 7 piece band seemed tight and were having a great time. Illegal Colombian immigrant bongo drummer and occasional ref-whistle blower, was a highlight hitting the bongos hard and fast which provided a nice texture to the bands rocking sound. Getting trough enough songs to satisfy the crowd they then attempted the worst encore I have ever experienced, leaving broken legged guitarist on the stage and literally walking off stage to be just out of sight, then turning around straight away to come back on, it left the crowd no time to distinguish the cheering for the performance and the re-appearance.

Finishing the night with classics An eye for a Brow, a Tooth for a Pick and Our Sunshine it was a fitting end to what was a good night of exciting music. It’s great to Groundies back and in fine form with a bunch of new songs which we will hopefully hear on a release in the not too distant future.

2-Tone Ska

In the late 50’s and early 60’s, Jamaica was experiencing the first wave of ska. It was a new blend of rock, jazz and reggae gets fused together to make a new form of music named ska. Now I know what your thinking when I say the word ‘ska’. You’re thinking about songs that were featured in the first Tony Hawk’s pro skater. The songs that your babysitter rocked out to when she was out in the backyard smoking joints like cigarettes and getting fingered by her boyfriend. Goldfinger, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and all that knee high tube sock wearing bullshit from the 90s right? Wrong. That mess is called third wave ska. It’s the untimely, drunken mistake child of what’s extremely, musically relevant.

The first wave of ska that was born in Jamaica had a major impact in the UK. Kids couldn’t get enough of the shit and it also loosened racial tension between the whites and blacks. In fact, they joined together and formed a blend of ska that is referred to as 2-tone ska. Basically, in the early 60’s, a shit load of Jamaican immigrants moved straight to London. Specifically the borough of Brixton. Keep in mind; Jamaica at times has been considered the highest emigration capital of the world. This is probably due to the fact that it is also the highest crime rate (per capita) in the world. The crime didn’t really cease when they got to Brixton either. The result of this mass emigration and crime wave was 2nd wave ska. Think of it as early gangster rap except without the gnarly lyrics about slappin’ bitches and selling 8-balls of coke.

2nd wave ska was essentially a bunch of white kids trying to be like the cool black kids from Brixton by combining with them to make some dope music. (Has anything really changed?) Case in point: 2-Tone Records. 2-Tone Records is probably the foundation of the 2nd wave London ska movement. It signed bands such as The Specials (who are playing at Splendour in the Grass 09) and Madness (who recently played a few months ago at the V Fest). Also some other bands to check out from this era are The (English) Beat and The Selecter. You know this shit when you hear it because of the hypnotic infusion of trumpets and brass with hollow, upbeat guitar riffs. It’s sick shit so give it a listen. Fuck, it’s a lot cooler than 3oh3, I’ll tell ya that. - Ian

Start a two piece band its easier all you need is a drummer and guitarist, there are only two people to worry about you can record bass have it play through your ipod or whatever, travel is cheaper, less conflict and if you are makng money its only getting split between two. Over the last couple of years there has been more an more two pieces coming through. Alot of these bands are getting quite a great amount of attention from the public. First band that comes to mind i would say would be "Black Keys"they are a great example they have such a massive sound for two people. Lately more garage style two pieces have started to pop up! like "NO AGE", "WAVVES" and in Australia "DZ". I wanted to introduce this band from canada "JAPANDROIDS" (most of you probably know them). They first caught my attention with there name! Its fucking cool an they sound like a two piece trying to be a five piece,there is alot going on in there music! They use alot of distortion and symbols i dont think the lead dude is much of a singer but they are a bit of fun. THey sound like more of a live band than a studio band, just released there debut "post-nothing" The cover reminds me of a band from the 1980's new wave scene. check them out at JAPANDROIDS

Alright. Sometimes there are things that are more pressing than music. Well, no not really at all. However, it is important that we do dive into the completely fucked up abyss of the human potential here. So be it…

Right now as we speak there could be some kid in the middle of America engaging in the use of a brand new drug. This isn’t just any “new” drug. This is a drug that is literally the cheapest, supposedly one of the most intense, and easily accessible high. It’s called “Jenkem”.

Basically, children in Nigeria started this a while ago and white trash in the middle of America somehow, miraculously caught onto it. God knows how any of these hicks found out what they were doing in the next town over let alone Nigeria It involves shitting/pissing/both into a jar of your choice. Then, the next step is letting that excrement that came straight from your rectum (or god forbid somebody else’s) to ferment over a specified time. I guess the longer you let it sit, the “better” the Jenkem gets. Then you proceed to take that jar, open it, and inhale all of the gas that is released. I know, I know… We all thought that derro guy that your ex introduced to you a few years ago was bad enough for huffing spray paint (whilst tagging up a retirement home), amyl or whatever can of aerosol he could get is clammy hands on, but this….holy fuck! Huffing shit?!?! Don’t believe me? Check out this news report on the matter... Apparently the kids call it “butt hash” Watch out for this term mom and dad, its how you know your kids are getting their rocks off on the shit (literally)…

Klaxons Collaborate With The Sun

The Klaxons have parted ways with their fluro and have jumped on the 'hey-we-love-the-earth-and-we're-green-and-stuff' bandwagon. The follow-up album to 2007's 'Myths of the Near Future' is set to be recorded at London's 'The Premises', the U.Ks only recording studio to generate it's energy from the big yellow hot thing in the sky. The long-awaited Round 2 from the boys was made even longer after Universal decided to flag their first attempt cause it was 'too dense, psychedelic, and too challenging'. Jamie Reynolds said that being forced back to the drawing board reminded him that they are 'first and foremost a pop band'. Word on the street is the really cool, chart topping pop album should drop mid year. Call me dense, psychedelic and challenging, but I wouldn't hate to hear the first attempt... .J.B.

06/05/09 - Elke, Quan and RATATAT

Great fucking night. It started off with Elke blasting out their big sound that they are becoming notorious on the GC for. These guys are rapidly paving their way for a promising and hopefully prominent future. It was definitely a perfect start to the evening as it set a cool atmosphere. The crowd wasn’t as big as it should have been but hey, it was pretty much like that the whole night anyway. (What the fuck was up with that?)

Next up was Quan (lead singer of legendary Brisbane band Regurgitator) showcasing his up and coming side project. He totally proved that taking the solo route from a formerly successful band is not always a shitty, non-profitable idea. There is no way that you could compare his newfound style to that of Regurgitator but I have to say it did have that same level of classic grittiness. The guy had killer beats that complemented some dope and at times hilarious lyrics. He rocked shit hard on stage and had endless energy as well smooth lyrical delivery. It was a great opener for what was to come, as he seemed to captivate the crowd effectively.

Finally there was Ratatat… Where should I start? These guys pretty much proved that they are the pioneers (if not the fathers) of the revived psych music scene that is coming out of New York today. The visuals in the background were epic and captivating. Added with the sporadic light set up, it magnified and engulfed the kaleidoscopic images, which ranged from tigers to explosions. It linked so perfectly to their unique brand of music that it was worth the price of admission alone. Their music, when played live, almost sounds infinitely better than studio recording. Mike Shroud produced amazing sounds with his guitar whilst conveying an amazing on stage persona (I must say, the dude had some killer moves). Adding to these alien sounds with the same steeze as the former, was his partner in crime on the bass Evan Mast. The constant switch from guitars to random items of electronic nature placed in an orderly fashion on stage never failed to impress. Due to demand from the under-packed crowd they came on for an encore that left everybody hypnotized. I guess the only way it could have been cooler was if I was brave enough to be under the influence of some mind-altering substance but a random guy I ran in to was already on top of that. As the show finished, we made our way out of the door. I looked over at him. With pupils as black as night, he smiled in a state of euphoria and said “That was the craaaazeist fuuuuckin mind bending journey of a thing I’ve ever seen maaaaan! What a trip!!!” “I’m sure it was man, I’m sure it was.” I replied. At this, he then continued to walk off into the distance of wherever the fuck he actually came from.

I just feel the need to do it again in saying WAVVES ARE RAD!!. A hoy-hoy! With the whole hallucinogenic “psych” thing that has been breaking onto the airwaves lately, there has been room for some pretty creative noise making. Obviously you’ve got your sunshine acid, “let’s dance naked in the desert” thing going on with fluro-clad mainstream bands of today right? You know who I’m talking about. MGMT, Empire of the Sun, fuck even Coldplay are jumping on it. Well, what happens when that euphoric acid trip turns bad and the bright colours turn into a wash of doom? Enter, A Place to Bury Strangers…

Although It has actually been a year since the release of their last single, the absence of the mention of this band has lead me to distraught. Referred to as “New York City’s loudest band”, this Brooklyn triangle of washed sound takes from some of the greatest influences of the niche genre that they have worked themselves into. Names such as The Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine are being dropped like bombs when describing the sounds of upcoming acts today. However, this band thoroughly deserves the affiliation with them. The sound is unique, reminiscent and smothering at the same time. Songs such as “Ocean” and the latest single “I know I’ll see you” provoke strange felling within the listener. On the same but other end of the spectrum “To fix a gash in your head” incorporates bizarre imagery and weirder tones. The unique, non conventional sounds this band produces are results of the customized special effects equipment that is made specifically for them. Their self titled album, although not so recently released, is definitely one that should back up a day of vivid thought. Be warned, this isn’t for anyone who feels like going out into the forest and dancing with magical fluorescent creatures to “Electric Feel”. This is more for the types who want to stroll through the graveyard at 3 in the morning by themselves. Visual shit aside, just give it a listen, what’s the worst that could happen? - Ian

Fear not there is hope for the hopeless yet.
Phoenix the band that somehow managed to strike a sing-a-long smile imprinted upon your face when truthfully underlying is Thomas Mars preaching the labors of love, being a trait that has led Phoenix to being unrivaled since the formation of the band during there childhood in Versailles.

Phoenix have been locked away for the last three years working on there new forthcoming release “Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart”. Although I have heard this record through somewhat uncouth means, I am proud to say from the opening track Lisztomania all the way through to Armistice, Phoenix have managed to ascend even further up the hierarchy creating nine songs each worthy of single release.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart will be released nationwide on the 25th of May.

Hey thrashers, I’m dragging one out of the vault by the dreadlocks today. If you like the rampant sounds of Fucked Up, you better know what fuelled the fire for that shit. In 1982, four Jamaican-Americans from Georgetown, Washington DC (arguably American hardcore music’s birth place) decided to make the jagged move from jazz-fusion to a bizarre blend of reggae and hardcore. Due to this odd shift, they created an album that will not only make you want to jump around but also kick the shit out of your dad. Bad Brains’ self-titled album established them as one of the pioneers of the American hardcore movement. Prophets of the scene Henry Rollins (Black Flag) and Ian Mackaye (Minor Threat) have agreed to this.
The album starts with the 100 miles an hour “Sailin’ On” and takes you through the many talents that this group of Rastafarians possess. It showcases guitarist Dr. Know’s gnarly guitar skills as well as lead singer H.R.’s raging wails. One of the key attributes of this album is its consistent shift from textbook and iconic hardcore to the reggae roots that the band could never turn its back on. Songs such as “Jah Calling and “I luv I jah” are a perfect example of this. However if one wants to experience the ultimate Bad Brains sound which made them as well as fundamental hardcore music in general, “Big Take Over” is a necessity as well as the classic “Banned in D.C.”. This is a golden album from a golden era that is best enjoyed in the atmosphere of a raging, fucked up house party. -Ian

Last night one of australia's hottest young band's "Tame Impala" sold out there show in byron bay at the great northern! They played a killer set! It was so good to watch a band and not feel like its rehearsed to perfection! There shows are like watching a massive jam with your favourite songs in between. I think they stopped like twice and once for there encore.
They have added a new guitarist who was rad, he fit's the part no doubt. They also hinted they are thinking of recording in byron! which seems a pretty fitting place for a Psych rock band to record there debut.

The new single "you've got a lot of nerve" has just been released for the follow up album yet to be named. The new record will drop later this year through Ivy League. It's been 3 years since the release of their debut "Replica Replica" this has left fans anxious as to the where about's and happening's of Red Riders! If 07 were the year of the Wombat and 08, the year of the Fox, then surely 09 can be the year of the Crocodile. Hailing from San Diego, and coming from the ashes of The Plot to Blow up the Eiffel Tower, Crocodiles are electro, punky and poppy all at once. Currently doing a lap round the states with none other than Ladytron and The Faint they certainly are ticking all the right boxes.

Their songs generally have a lot of feedback, with a drum machine, synth and guitar also at the helm, they make a lot of noise for a two piece. Making an epic sound the songs can be quite catchy even from the first listen and have been compared to bands like The Jesus and Mary Chain.

Check out the vid for their new single Neon Jesus it was made using photocopy’s of stills made into an animation and sums up the band nicely. Also check out 'I Wanna Kill' on their myspace its a kick arse tune.

The band that has delved into an orgy of genres and snuck out to greet you with a warm embrace and somewhat subtle whisper only to then break out into a bipolar fit of percussion and abrasive vocal stabs,
Volcano! refuse to be anything but that, a slow molten melting pot, that occasionally explodes and out runs anyone trying to survive their sound, leaving nothing but content corpses of faithful followers.

This hard to believe “trio” hail from Chicago Illinois and released their astonishing debut LP Beautiful Seizure on the leaf label.
There live show is stated to be a frenetic desperate emotional roller coaster, and judging from the sudden chord changes to absolute ignorance towards basic song structure you can only imagine the depraved mind state you would be thrown into, gasping for air and wondering what just happened? If you may just be lucky enough to ever witness anything like it ever again?
That answer is NO. virginity has no second chance and if you have not heard Volcano! Prepair yourself for an absolute loss of innocence, at least it wont leave you reminiscing and choking back a mouth full of vomit.

In modern day music the patterns seem somewhat replicated continuously each week a new gimmick band that spans a 3 record lifespan then die's away.
Through this trend we are seeing new genre's being borrowed each week, as of recent the shoe gaze genre has rummaged through the distortion and crawled into popular music,
this had led me to review one of the few forefathers of this genre and an un-rivaled force in music.
That is the otherworldly Gaelic Cocteau Twins.

Encompassing an ethereal croon Elizabeth Fraser female icon and ex lover of Jeff Buckley Flows through the endless sea of Lo-Fi guitar fuzz only to carry out an at times undecipherable wall of melodies, this has been likened to speaking in tongue's or the homeland historic mouth music.

Spanning an impressive eight flawless albums from 1979 till 1997.
Milk & Kisses being there last record was by all means the transition from shoe gaze confound to a scarce Indie culture demographic to a more mainstream approach.
My advice is postpone the next inevitable trend and submerse yourself in what is the legacy of the Cocteau twins, Head over heels and Milk & kisses being a suitable starting point.

this truly is the nail in the coffin and it only brings the ever so sad news that the greatest female band of this present century has cluttered our thoughts and clung to any remnant of imagination left in music, and just as that euphoria comes into reach it died away just as fast.

Thieves may very well help define female groups for days to come, thats all we can hope for.

For all you fans of Brisbane Indie pop quartet Yves Klein Blue they have released details of their sparkle new album. It will be called Ragged & Ecstatic and the lead single will be called Getting Wise. No word on the release date but they are doing a quick tour around LA, NY and London before it drops so probably early June sometime. Produced by Kevin Augunas (Cold War Kids) in LA and finished by Scott Hosrcroft (The Presets) it should be ripping.

Lightspeed Champion the genius has just finished recording his second albulm a follow up to "falling of the lavender bridge" which was the most underated albulm of 2007, one of my favourite records of all time. So he finished his second albulm and goes straight on to recording another to be released shortly after the second! CANNOT WAIT!
Dev explained all this in his blog: "Guess I finished recording the new album, kind of.. it's in the mixing stages now, and just finishing off the three songs I'am collaborating on with a musical idol of mine! I can't wait for people to hear it !

Also, I should inform everyone, that I've just started on ANOTHER album to hopefully be released not too long after this next Lightspeed record."

Deerhunter; being described as anything from ambient to noise-rock Deerhunter are a band outta Atlanta who are coming this way for a tour early June playing Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane in back to back nights.

Playing many styles Deerhunter always keep the anticipation up in their songs and can turn from upbeat and rocky, to slow and hazy at any time and make it sound good.

With most of the members having side projects (Atlas Sound, Lotus Plaza, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) and running a cool blog that gives you anything from song lyrics, bootleg live recordings and new singles there is always plenty going on.

The Pains Of Being Pure at Heart are a four piece indie band from New York, with sounds that could easily fit into an 80s or 90s are making music that also is relevant and fresh today. After a massive sxsw playing 10 shows and being much talked about are about to embark on a massive 47 dates in 56 days tour across American and Europe, its fair to say its going to be a big year for this band.

Their debut self-titled full length album was released on February 3, 2009 on Slumberland Records and is a glorious Indie Pop record filled with boy/girl vocals, blissful melodies and blistering drums. With 10 songs that sound like classics from the first listen and then grow even further you wont be able to put the record down. The intro on A Teenager In Love will get you moving and current single Young Adult Friction is also a gem. check them out!

SXSW is a massive showcasing festival were record labels, music business excecs,movie makers and bands from around the world cruise in to network, play shows and possibly sign deals. Anyways Came Home PLayed V fest all around the country! They have not settled in as they are moving from Melbourne to london slash already have to play a massive amount of dates all around europe slash the world japan and U.S.A also! In the mean time they released another Single "Science of Fear", The song draws you in straight away its very fast and has that sort of epic sound you would expect after "sweet Disposition". Some have realised the past Rocker's were the greats and pioneers, you always here people saying "old bands are the best" That may be true but that just gives out hope for new musicians to add on and re-crerate . Finding a musician or artist that you can connect with in today's society is just as amazing as listening to an old record that makes you feel warm inside. It's just a matter of looking and you will find. I mean dont you love knowing and listening to an artist that no body else does. LIAM LYNCH THE DO IT YOURSELF ONE HIT WONDER, HAD KIDS SCREAMING WHATEVER ACROSS THE WORLD.
It seemed as though liam had dissapeard all together since his hit in 1992. where did he go? we did a little research and found out liam did not dissapear from the music scene at all he just went behind it and a bit further. Liam has done everything from creating writing the music, acting, directing and producing m Mtv's Sifl and Olly Show, Lynch won the Music Week 2002 CADS award for best International Video for his video "Tribute/Tenacious D" which he wrote and directed. He co wrote the music for "School OF Rock" with Jack Black. He has also written and produced music videos for No doubt, the foo fighters and Queens of the stone age. Lynch recently finished a surreal documentary on the band "The Eagles of Death Metal".

These are just some of the highlights in this guys career, He has worked with two of the beatles, Ringo PLayed drums on one of his records "Fake Songs", the albulm went top ten in both Australia and the U.K. Paul Mccartney picked Liam to study at Pauls own institute of performing arts in liverpool. Lynch was not only in the Institute's first graduating class, but one of 5 musicians handpicked by the ex-Beatle to work on a one-on-one basis.
Liam's insomnia might be a reason he gets all of this work done.

Sonic Youth's 16th studio albulm is set to be released june 2009 on Matador records.
This see's SY leaving geffen after a long partnership. i then go on to say SY amaze me this is there 28th year as a recording/touring band, they are so creative, still super cool ( thurston doesnt age) and have probably the raddest sound out.

"Recorded through November and December of last year at the band's Echo Canyon West studio in Hoboken, NJ, 'The Eternal' features many firsts for a Sonic Youth album, including a number of shared vocals between Kim, Thurston, and Lee, and the studio debut of former Pavement/Dustdevils bassist Mark Ibold, a member of Sonic Youth's touring band for the past few years. They will be touring throughout the summer in support of the new album.

Of 'The Eternal', Matador's Gerard Cosloy says, "We've not had a record in our recent history that's been the subject of nearly as much speculation and anticipation. Suffice to say we're pretty amazed at the way the band delivered something this neoteric while still sounding like, well, themselves.
